Amber Koepke - Disney College Program Blog
December 10, 2008 - A future Disney program campus rep.
Hey Rammies! It's me again. My college program with Disney is almost over, but I feel like there is so much more to talk about. It has been quite the eventful week, and it's not over yet.
Monday night, College Program organizers hosted the biggest event of the season. The winter formal was held at Epcot, and they pulled out all the stops for us. The "Night on Mt. Olympus" featured characters from Hercules, amazing food, excellent music, and even a few prizes. It was quite the treat and way better than anyone there had even expected it to be. So many people showed up that you would have thought it was open to all cast members and not just college program students. It just shows how large the program is. I even made a few new friends that night. Events like this are put on to give us a fun way to let loose, meet new people, and just enjoy ourselves outside of work. The coordinators host all sorts of activities for us, including the Night of Stars talent show, pool parties, basketball tournaments, trips to NASA and Busch Gardens, and many more.
Thursday night I went with my roommates to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom. The party featured snow on Main Street, free hot chocolate and cookies, special characters in their winter attire, a special Christmas parade and holiday fireworks.
Saturday we will be filming the Christmas parade with Regis and Kelly at Magic Kingdom. (It's the one that everyone sees on TV on Christmas day.) To top it all off, I recently found out that I got a position as a Disney College Program Campus Rep. So if you have any questions or concerns, or just want to know more, I can help you out. You might see me out and about on campus next semester promoting the Disney College Program with the three other people on the team.
Well, that's all for now. Graduation is next week, so I'll write more after I earn my ears!
November 4, 2008 - A magical experience...
Hello my fine Fort Collins friends! It's me again here to share with you the most magical experience I have had so far on my college program. It was Halloween time and Disney celebrates the season with Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties; exclusive events where they close Magic Kingdom to let only the people who have purchased special tickets enjoy in the festivities. The most recent party was held this past Tuesday. On Tuesday, Princess Jasmine spent her day meeting guests next to the magic carpet ride. A girl came up to her with her parents, and her mom said that the girl would be dressing up as Jasmine for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party later that night. Jasmine wanted to see the girl when she was dressed up, so she told the family to come back during the party for before-and-after pictures together. The little girl came back that night looking fabulous with a pink Jasmine outfit, the Jasmine wig, and Jasmine-style eyeliner on. And this time she got to meet Aladdin, too!
The next day, the family went to Epcot and had lunch with the princesses in Norway. And who should be there but that same familiar face...Princess Jasmine. The Princess couldn't believe that she got to see the family for a third time, so she took the girl's autograph book and wrote a special note inside it just for her. Luckily, Jasmine had a picture with her and Aladdin (and Genie and Abu, too) from the Halloween party the night before, so she signed it and gave it to the family. In return, Jasmine got a drawing of herself from the little girl. Jasmine finished meeting all the other families in the restaurant and went back to get a picture with the entire family. The parents had tears in their eyes and the father said that the princess made their entire vacation. Princess Jasmine made it halfway out the restaurant before she started bawling. After that, Jasmine sent a letter to the family's resort saying how wonderful it was to see them and asking their daughter to ride Aladdin's magic carpets with her before they left. On Saturday, the family came back before heading home for one last visit with Princess Jasmine and a special carpet ride with the Princess and the little girl.
Halloween Party at Disney
Stories this magical don't happen every day, but when they do you know that you made someone's dreams come true. You made all their time and effort in planning their vacation worth it. You gave them a story that they can go back home with and share with all their friends and family. You created the magic. YOU. And that is why I'm on the Disney College Program, because that feeling you get is the best feeling in the world.
This program really is the experience of a lifetime. If you're looking to try something new, or if my story sounds like something you would like to be a part of, I recommend you apply. Once again, if you guys have any questions at all, send me an e-mail: akoepke@simla.colostate.edu
More to come!

October 8, 2008 - Just another day in the wonderful world of Disney!
Hey guys, I'm Amber Koepke. I'm a junior here at CSU, and I'm currently taking part in the Disney College Program. For those of you who don't know about it, it's a semester-long program where students can come take college credit classes through Disney University while working at fabulous Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I have also chosen to take a few of CSU's classes online to stay on track with my graduation plans. For anyone who has a business minor, the Disney College program is a great opportunity for you. There are Disney classes that will transfer over and CSU offers practically all the classes needed for a business minor online. This way, it won't feel like you are taking off from school for a semester.
I'm on the fall advantage program with Disney, so I've been in Orlando since May and will leave in January. For anyone that might be interested, let me tell you this is one amazing opportunity. I'm living in the brand new, fully-furnished Patterson Square Apartments. It's cheaper than when I lived in Corbett Hall. Disney provides transportation to just about anywhere I would need to go, whether it's work, the grocery store, Wal-Mart, the mall, the post office, etc. The Disney Housing Program is always putting on housing events like pool parties, grocery bingo, trips to the beach, etc. They really do put a lot of effort into making everything fun and convenient while you are here.
My favorite part of the college program, though, has to be my actual job. There are many options to choose from if you decide to go through the program. You can be a lifeguard at one of Disney's water parks, work at the front desk of a Disney resort, sell merchandise in the parks, quick service food and beverage ... the list goes on. Personally, I think I've got the best job you can get on the college program.
Pocahontas in Disney World
I work in entertainment, which means I get pretty good work hours, more breaks than others. I'm one of the highest paid roles in the college program, and I know that the main reason guests even come to Disney world is to see my role as a Disney cast member. Imagine a little girl coming into the park for the first time, dressed head-to-toe just like her favorite Disney princess, then waiting in line for 45 minutes just to see that princess. And when she finally gets to see her, that little girl's eyes get so big, and she's practically speechless, and all she can manage to say is "You're my favorite princess." Or what about the little boy who has been at the parks for three days and still hasn't been able to find Pluto, and when he finally does, he gives that big yellow dog the longest hug you could ever imagine. That's what I get to be a part of here at Disney. Let me tell you, it truly is magical. I get to share the story of Disney characters with guests of all ages from all over the world.
If that sounds like something you're interested in, you have to go to an audition first (but don't worry, it's not that hard) before you get accepted into the college program. If anyone has any questions about the program, check out the website at www.wdwcollegeprogram.com or feel free to e-mail me at akoepke@simla.colostate.edu. I'm always willing to share my experiences! Be on the lookout for my next blog; it's time for Halloween parties, so I've got plenty more to say.
Until next time,
Amber Koepke
