About My Pictures

  1. The Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany is basically like a mini Oktoberfest – huge beer, pretzels, meat, music and loud noise.
  2. This is a picture of my best friend Megan and I in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. It was a 65 degree day without a cloud in the sky!
  3. This is a picture of Megan and me in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. It was raining really hard, but that didn’t ruin our adventure.
  4. This is a picture of the Chain Bridge and the Castle hill in Budapest, Hungary. I thought the city was the most beautiful at night when all the buildings were lit up.
  5. This picture was taken from Petrin Tower, which was designed similar to the Eiffel Tower. Prague is incredibly beautiful because of all the red rooftops and it is known as the city of 100 spires.
  6. This is a picture of the Czech currency called Czech koruna or Czech crown. The exchange rate is about 20kc to the $1. It took some time getting used to carrying around 2000 bills.
  7. This photo is of my friend Dave from England and me in front of the Berliner Dom in Berlin, Germany. I think it looks fake!
  8. Obviously this is a picture taken in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background. I traveled with my friends Jen (from Texas), Lory and Meghan (both from CSU.)
  9. This is a photo of a few of the program participants in one of the large classrooms where our classes were held. The blue and orange color scheme always made me think of the Denver Broncos.
  10. The overnight train to Krakow, Poland - we left Prague at 9pm and arrived in Krakow at 5am. The sleep couchette was for 6 people but it was incredibly tiny. Lory and Tyler (from Texas Tech) were brave enough to sit up on the highest bed – too high for me!
  11. This photo was taken in Paris as the sun was setting over the Seine River.
  12. I took this picture of my foot "stepping" over the historical Berlin Wall. The place of the wall was marked with these stones to show where West and East Berlin was separated.
  13. This is the amazing, picturesque city of Venice!
  14. This is a sample of the typical Czech food – a lot of meat!
  15. I love this picture of the Vltava River. The buildings along the river are so beautiful and have so much character. Prague has incredible architecture that has been preserved for thousand of years!

This past fall, I attended the University of Economics in Prague through the Central European Studies Program. The program targets both undergraduate and graduate students studying economics, international studies and business. All classes were taught in English and were held in a building that is less than one year old.

There were almost 150 international students enrolled in the program during the fall 2006 semester from countries such as Germany, Italy, Hungary, Finland, Norway, Spain, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Peru, South Korea, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. All students in the CESP program live in a dormitory a little less than 15 minutes from school. My program began September 25 and ended December 22, with classes taught Monday through Thursday.

One of the most helpful programs organized through CESP is the Czech Buddy System. Before my arrival in Prague, I was assigned a “Czech Buddy,” a student at the University. My buddy, Helena, picked me up at the airport and served as a translator during my first week; she helped me get settled into the dormitory, buy food at the grocery store, buy a transportation pass, etc. Over the course of the semester, Helena and I became good friends. I learned a lot about Czech culture through her friendship.

I left the United States on September 11 and returned exactly four months later on January 11, 2007. I had the opportunity to spend a week in the United Kingdom. I spent a few days in London and then flew to Edinburgh, Scotland, with a friend who is studying there. During the semester, I also had the privilege of going on weekend trips to Vienna and Salzburg (Austria); Regensburg, Munich and Berlin (Germany); Paris (France); Barcelona (Spain); Krakow (Poland); Budapest (Hungary); and Venice, Milan, Rome and Florence (Italy).

An interesting aspect of my experience in Prague was my interaction with the Czech people. I conducted six interviews with Czech women for my senior Honors thesis on the role of women in business in Prague. It was fascinating to learn more about the culture and gender roles in the Czech Republic. Thanks to the many contacts I made, I had the unique opportunity of being invited into a few Czech homes for a meal.
