About My Blog

I am a junior at CSU majoring in Technical Journalism with a concentration in public relations. I work for the Office of the President as a presidential intern and I am responsible for operating the MyCSU Web site. I am also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the Public Relations Student Society of America. Between those organizations and school, I'm always on the move.

Wow! This semester is flying by and I've hardly had time to blog about anything. Let me update you on a few cool things happening with me ...

First and foremost, I finalized plans to launch a newer, better version of MyCSU! The new site will be called MyCSU 2.0 and will feature a new look, searchable archives, and a network of social media sites that will connect MyCSU to the online community. Some of the communities that will now be directly networked with the MyCSU site include: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flicker and RSS feeds. This project was a long time in the making and it was exciting to see the first stages take off! The final product will launch on January 19, 2010, the first day of the spring semester.

On the academic side of things, I am working on finalizing a plan for my senior honors thesis and running around like a madman trying to keep up with classes. As it stands, my thesis proposal calls for a comparative study of public relations tactics used in the U.S. in a city like Denver versus those in a similar-sized European city. I have a few more items to check off the list (like finding a thesis advisor ... ) but that project will be done soon.

School aside, I occasionally have a chance for some fun activities. On Sunday nights, I get to play on my fraternity's volleyball team with a few women from Pi Beta Phi. So far, we are undefeated but I can't tell if that's because we're good or our opponents are bad. For now, I'll assume we're just great athletes.

Also coming up is my fraternity's 12th Annual Bachelor Auction. I have the great honor of being the emcee for that evening's festivities, which will raise money for our YouthAIDS, our national philanthropy. I'll be using the next few days to brush up on my auctioneering skills, ha!

As you can see from these few short paragraphs, life is keeping me on my toes. Today, however, I just might have to take a break and head outside. It's sunny and my computer is telling me the temperature is a sweltering 72 — a rarity for November. Have a great weekend!

As I stood in the stands at Hughes Stadium on Sept. 12, at the end of the fourth quarter in the game between CSU and Weber State, I was surprised by what I saw. With the Rams ahead by only one point and Weber State about to score, things were looking bleak. Despite this, CSU students were sticking around.

For anyone who has been to more than one game in the last few years, this is a rarity. Typically, when things start to go downhill or it looks like the Rams could lose, fans start to head for the parking lot halfway through the fourth quarter, if not sooner. But that afternoon, even with rain and a chilly wind, they stuck it out to the end. Fortunately, the end meant a win for CSU!

As I headed for my car after the victory, I thought to myself, "I am really proud to be a CSU Ram." As cliché as this might sound, I meant it. And I would venture a guess that I’m not the only one who thought that leaving the game.

My name is Bijah Gibson. Since nearly everyone asks where Bijah comes from, I’ll answer the question before you ask it.

Bijah is the name of an outlaw cowboy from a book called Catlow. Written by the famous western novelist Louis L’Amour, the book follows the adventures of Bijah Catlow through Texas and south of the border. My parents read the book, loved it and game me the name. If you’re ever looking for a good story of adventure, you should pick it up.

I work for the Office of the President as a presidential intern and I am responsible for operating the MyCSU Web site. I am also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the Public Relations Student Society of America. Between those organizations and school, I’m always on the move.

Throughout the year, I will be blogging about my experiences at CSU. Working as the MyCSU coordinator has allowed me to experience many facets of our university and has made me even more proud to be a CSU Ram. This university is a great place and so far it’s been great to me. Keep your eye out for more and remember to be proud of CSU. It’s your university and you make it great.

Happy trails,
Bijah
