CSU Environmental Health Interns
Summer 2008 - Firing up change in Nicaragua
Imagine spending two months in a foreign country working to change the world. Sound pretty amazing? That’s exactly how summer went for CSU Environmental Health Interns Erin McGuinn, Tom Hraha, and Alisa Mae Schultz Tonozzi. While in Nicaragua this summer, these three interns studied the effects of indoor air pollution (one of the world’s top killers) and worked to create solutions to the problem. Much of their time was spent in El Fortin, a barrio on the outskirts of the city of Granada. In El Fortin, they took readings and gathered data on the indoor air pollution coming from cooking fires inside the homes of locals. From there, they installed a number of more efficient, safer stoves for people to use. When they weren’t working hard to make a difference in the lives of Nicaraguans, the interns were able to enjoy some of the beauties of this Central American country. The stories of their trip, with all its adventures, twists and turns, can be seen in full by clicking on the links below.
