Scripting Shelby: Cutting Corners

Today’s Song: “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” by Train

We all know the stereotype; college students are broke. Unfortunately for a lot of us, it’s true. Those of us with jobs still never seem to find enough cash to support certain habits. But I’ve found ways (that I don’t mind!) to cut corners and save some green.brown-plaid-sheet-set

Energy bills

I like my hot showers. That’s something that I would fight the world for. I like ‘em hot, and I like ‘em long. But I don’t like paying for heat in the house…as much as my roommates would prefer the thermostat higher. So what do I do? Keep it low in the living room, non-existent in my bathroom, and as for the bedroom? Well, there are few things I love more than flannel sheets.

I walk to school (though yes, I am literally a block from campus), rather than paying for gas or parking, and I thank the gas lords that my little Subbie gets great gas mileage.

Not just for the ladies

Shopping. Ugh. For girls right? Well guys, you wear clothes too. And if you buy your own, they can be quite pricey unless you’re willing to get a little thrifty (pun definitely intended). I shop at thrift stores (yes Thrift-storesso hipster, I know), and stores that are so cheap they might as well be. Perhaps there are readers out there who like their name brand clothing that costs more than the quality suggests. Perhaps there are those who are afraid of looking cheap.

I pride myself with being able to shop—for others and myself. I find what I’m looking for. But it’s honestly not hard to dress yourself well from thrifty stores. I look at it as an adventure. Like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.

Until Tuesday readers, the last full week of regularly scheduled blogging for the semester.
